wanna take a ride?

If you are looking for a bargain in suborbital space flight, this may
be just the ticket. It’s called HEAT, or Hybrid Exo Atmospheric
Transporter, and it’ll propel a human into space at an easy 3g’s,
or so they say.

The company is Copenhagen Suborbitals. Better put them on your
wish list because it doesn’t look like it will be long before you can
hop into your little beercan with a view and rocket away to just
below low earth orbit while staying on a budget. What fun!

Would the Last Honest Reporter Please Turn On the Lights?
By Orson Scott Card

Editor’s note: Orson Scott Card is a Democrat and a newspaper columnist, and in this opinion
piece he takes on both while lamenting the current state of journalism.

An open letter to the local daily paper — almost every local daily paper in America:

I remember reading All the President’s Men and thinking: That’s journalism. You do what it takes to get the truth and you lay it before the public, because the public has a right to know.

This housing crisis didn’t come out of nowhere. It was not a vague emanation of the evil Bush administration.

It was a direct result of the political decision, back in the late 1990s, to loosen the rules of lending so that home loans would be more accessible to poor people. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were authorized to approve risky loans.

What is a risky loan? It’s a loan that the recipient is likely not to be able to repay.

The goal of this rule change was to help the poor — which especially would help members of minority groups. But how does it help these people to give them a loan that they can’t repay? They get into a house, yes, but when they can’t make the payments, they lose the house — along with their credit rating.

They end up worse off than before.

A pretty powerful editorial from a Democrat that can see through the
smoke screen. I suggest it as required reading.

have you got big balls?

“If something goes wrong, the thermite will go off instantaneously,”
Oldham says. “There will be no ducking or running out of the way.
So make sure you’re in the position you want to be in when you’re
incinerated.” Now there’s something you don’t here everyday but had
you been up at Black Rock, Nevada a few short weekends ago, that’s
exactly what you might have heard.

High power rocketry, something I’ve blogged about several times here
at admit-one, but this event is different. It’s RoCstock on a smaller
scale, times 10. It’s called Balls and thats exactly what you need if you
are going to participate in this once a year weekend. I’m planning to be
at the next one as a spectator. Read the article, it’s pretty crazy!

see them but they are there making it all work. Thanks!

Something different. A variety of castles to look upon.
I used to like to draw castles when I was in High School

Cool stuff.

From Science Fiction to Science Fact

Filed under: Technology — IyoKobat @ 11:58 pm

In this highly readable and exciting work, Kaku builds a case for achieving
Arthur C. Clarke’s 3rd law: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is
indistinguishable from magic.” Kaku shows how the terrain of the impossible,
typically found only in science-fiction, is being systematically conquered by
science. Force-fields, teleportation, robots, time-travel, and starships are dealt
with seriously and on a time continuum: how long until we achieve these. By
classifying these various “fantastical” ideas into three different ranges of time,
Kaku argues for when we’ll see them.
