Interesting advertising from Japan. You will
want to buy one of these extra sanitary toilet
seats. I wonder if it will wipe for you too.

Lost in Translation

lost in translation

What happens when an English phrase is
translated (by computer) back and forth
between 5 different languages? The authors
of the Systran translation software probably
never intended this application of their
program.
The resulting half-English, half-foreign, and
totally non sequitur response bears almost
no resemblance to the original. Remember
the old game of “Telephone”? Something is
lost, and sometimes something is gained.
Try it for yourself!

looking out for terror

In November of 2004, visitors were asked to
anticipate a terrorist attack, and to be creative.
The report from the 911 Commission sited
a “lack of imagination” as a reason that the
World Trade Center hijackattack was not
averted.

Voyager One Approaches Interstellar Space

artist's concept showing the Voyager spacecraft approaching interstellar space

Launched from Earth on September 5, 1977, the Voyager 1 spacecraft is now 8.7 billion miles from the Sun and is reaching what most scientists believe is the edge of of our solar system.   It’s too bad that this program is one which is curently facing cuts from the NASA budget (I believe that their staff is already under two dozen people).  Hopefully they will keep this one alive as long as it keeps bringing back new, unique, science data.
